Cooper Criswell, Red Sox silence Giants
Brian Fluharty-USA TODAY Sports

Cooper Criswell pitched five strong innings and Jarren Duran and Wilyer Abreu each collected three hits as the Boston Red Sox beat the visiting San Francisco Giants 4-0 on Tuesday in the opener of a three-game series.

Criswell (2-1) limited the Giants to two hits. He walked one and struck out four as Boston recorded its sixth shutout of the season.

Abreu had a single, double and triple, and he also drew a walk. Duran had three singles and walked once.

Rob Refsnyder added two hits for the Red Sox, who scored in each of the first four innings and extended their winning streak to three games. Refsnyder also had two RBIs.

Michael Conforto, Jorge Soler, Wilmer Flores and Matt Chapman each had one of San Francisco's four hits, all of which were singles.

Giants starter Logan Webb (3-2) allowed four runs on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out four. Webb threw 91 pitches, 52 for strikes.

Webb entered the game with a 19-inning scoreless streak but was unable to extend the run, as the Red Sox took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Tyler O'Neill singled, moved to second when Abreu walked and scored on a Refsnyder single. O'Neill's single stretched his hitting streak to eight games.

Boston extended its lead to 2-0 in the second when Duran's single drove in Reese McGuire from third. McGuire reached base on a walk.

The Red Sox made it 3-0 when Refsnyder's single scored Abreu in the third. Abreu opened the inning with a double.

It was 4-0 after Duran singled, stole second and scored on Abreu's triple in the fourth.

Garrett Cooper made his Red Sox debut on Tuesday. He started at first base but had to leave the game after he was hit by a pitch in the fifth inning.

Cooper, 33, was designated for assignment by the Chicago Cubs last week and was acquired by Boston on Saturday for cash considerations. He went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts in his debut.
